After six years, it’s easy to get lost in developing software and forget to talk about our core belief: The most productive teams can always talk about their problems. When we develop a new feature, it’s because data tells us it will make it easier to support speaking up by lowering the barrier to entry for reporting, making investigations more actionable, and generally raising the comfort level and ease of use for incident reporting, case management, and DEI compliance training. People who don’t feel heard are unhappy and less productive; chances are, they won’t survive at your organization. We build Spot to help you achieve a safe, inclusive, welcoming environment where your people can thrive. And we’re always taking suggestions! You know where to find us: hello@talktospot.com

At Spot we think a lot about how to lower the barrier to speaking up when it's crucial to prevent escalation or to give someone much-needed support. In a space dominated by legacy enterprise tools, good UX helps. Simple things like these posters help, too. Any Spot customer can go to their dashboard and download poster files with their logo and a unique QR code to access their Spot instance. Thanks to Alaska Department of Fish and Game for the prompt to up our poster game and release some new designs!

I said we’d never do it, and I was wrong. ☎ Spot just launched our new telephone hotline, after years of refusing "b/c we build for the future.” Why did we finally develop a hotline? Accessibility. A call-in reporting option is helpful to individuals who have an easier time talking than typing. We still think it’s less intimidating to talk to a truly nonjudgmental, anonymous third party when raising an issue at work, so our hotlines are answered by a machine, not a human. Call the numbers below to try it out (you won't have to talk to a person, promise)!

72% of employees would report workplace issues if they could do so anonymously. 40% of employees feel that communication was lacking in recent investigations. A new survey from HR Acuity reiterates the facts that Spot has been operating on since 2017: - Nearly half of workplace misconduct goes unreported (this number has gone down!) - People (46%) still fear retaliation for speaking up, BUT... - Anonymous reporting works if an organization finds the right tool and uses it in good faith. We've been building for this reality for 6 years, and I'm glad that folks are still enumerating the problem. The longer you're in the game, the better you understand how these facts penetrate organizational culture and the more likely you are to design processes that actually work to change them.

The Spot team has spent 5(!) years listening to customers and building out anonymous incident reporting and case management to solve workflow pain points. Today we're rolling out @mentions! You can now mention another admin in an internal note on a report, and that person will be tagged and notified. We all have a lot of tools to manage. @mentions are a big step to help people know for sure when they need to check in on an investigation.

HR and compliance teams use way too many tools. And there’s (kind of) a good reason for that: Half a decade ago, startups began tackling point solutions. Incident reporting is broken. Compliance training is broken. Employee performance and engagement processes are broken. Those were the refrains. The result was thoughtful, well-designed tools that work better for both employees and organizations than online forms and databases designed three decades ago. Organizations were also willing to put time and resources into vetting new HR tools b/c the #MeToo and Black Lives Matter movements helped center DEI and the employee experience. 5-7 years later, there's a recommitment to software bundling, especially in HR tech. That’s a big reason that Spot is partnering with Deel, the global payroll and compliance provider, as it moves into the HR space. Fewer HR tools, more HR power. Find Spot in the Deel app store. Automate your anti-harassment trainings and plug in friendly anonymous incident reporting. Modern global hiring, onboarding, payment, and DEI compliance software in one place—who wouldn’t want that?
